Vocabulary Elements of Art and Design Line - Two points connected. Shape - A figure or form. Form/Volume - The amount of space an object takes up. Color - The pigmentation that your eye perceives based on the reflection of the light. Value/Tone - The dark and light areas - shadows and shading. Texture - The appearance or consistency of a surface. Space - The area in between objects. Perspective - The view at which you see an object/scene.
Principles of Art and Design Rhythm - The flow of a piece. Movement - The way a piece of art moves. Proportion/Scale - The comparative relationship to a whole. Balance - Arranging elements so none of it is overpowering or intense. Unity - The elements all functioning well with one another. Harmony - Elements combined in an aesthetically pleasing way. Contrast - An element that's noticeably different than the rest of the piece. Emphasis (Focal Point/Center of Interest) - The element that the eye is drawn to within a piece.
